Refractive error

Your eyes work hard to help you see the world clearly. To see well, light must focus perfectly on the retina. The retina is a light-sensing part at the back of your eye.

This bending of light is called refraction. It happens when light passes through the cornea and the lens. When light lands exactly on the retina, it is called emmetropia. This means your eye is in a perfect state for seeing. However, many people experience refractive errors instead. These happen when the eye does not focus light accurately.

There are several ways these errors work. Myopia, or nearsightedness, happens if the eyeball is too long. In this case, the eye bends light too much. This makes far away objects look blurry. Hyperopia, or farsightedness, happens if the eyeball is too short. This makes close objects look blurry.

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is not a uniform shape. This can make objects look stretched out or distorted. Finally, presbyopia happens as people get older. The lens loses its flexibility and cannot change shape easily. This makes it hard to see things up close.

Doctors use special tools to find these errors. An eye exam helps a professional check your vision. They might use a trial frame with different lenses. They may also use a tool called a retinoscope. This tool lets them watch how light reflects inside your eye.

Some doctors use an automated refractor to get quick estimates. They might even use a Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor for high accuracy. They can also use a pinhole occluder to help identify errors. These tests ensure you get the right help for your eyes.

Refractive errors are very common across the globe. It is estimated that one to two billion people have them. In 2013, about 660 million people had errors that were not corrected. This included 9.5 million people who were blind due to these errors.

Rates change depending on where you live. About 25% of Europeans are affected by these errors. In Asia, the rate is much higher at 80%. Myopia is the most common type of disorder. It affects between 15 and 49% of adults.

There are many ways to fix blurry vision. Eyeglasses are the easiest and safest method. They act like extra lenses to bend light correctly. You can use single vision lenses or multifocal lenses. Contact lenses are another choice for many people. Some are soft, while hard lenses can change the cornea's shape.

Some people choose refractive surgery to help them see. This can permanently change the shape of the cornea. Other surgeries implant new lenses inside the eye. These tools help people see the world with clarity again.
