Farsightedness

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Farsightedness is a way of seeing that can be quite tricky. People with this condition can see distant objects very clearly. However, things that are close up often look blurry. This is also called hyperopia or hypermetropia.

It is a type of refractive error. This means the eye does not bend light the right way. It is a common thing that happens to many people. It can cause eye strain or even headaches in the front of the head.

To understand how it works, we must look at how light enters the eye. Light travels into the eye and should land on the retina. The retina is the part at the very back of the eye. In a person with hyperopia, the light focuses behind the retina instead of on it.

This can happen if the eyeball is too short. It can also happen if the lens or the cornea is too flat. The cornea is the clear front part of the eye. If the cornea is flat, it cannot bend the light enough.

There are many different reasons why this happens. Some people are born with it, as almost all newborns are hypermetropic. As children grow, this often decreases. Simple hypermetropia is the most common form. It happens because of normal ways the eye develops. Other types are caused by things like diabetes or eye injuries. Sometimes, the lens might even be missing, which is called aphakia. This can lead to very high levels of farsightedness.

Doctors use special tools to find out if someone has this condition. They might use a tool called a phoropter or trial lenses. They can also use a slit lamp to look at the cornea and iris.

It is very common in young children. About 8% of six-year-olds have it. By age 15, the rate drops to only 1%. Later in life, it becomes common again. After age 40, about half of all people face a similar issue called presbyopia.

Luckily, there are many ways to help people see better. The easiest way is to wear eyeglasses. These glasses use convex lenses to fix the light. Contact lenses are another option and can give a wider view. Some people choose surgery to change the shape of their cornea. There is also a way to put a new lens inside the eye. This is called IOL implantation. This can be very helpful for people who do not have a natural lens.
