LASIK

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

LASIK is a special kind of eye surgery used to fix vision. It helps people who have trouble seeing things clearly. Doctors use it to treat myopia, which is nearsightedness. It also helps with hypermetropia, or farsightedness, and astigmatism. An ophthalmologist is the doctor who performs this procedure.

This surgery changes the shape of the cornea. The cornea is the clear covering on the front of your eye. By changing its shape, light enters the eye in a better way.

Before the surgery starts, the doctor must do a lot of checking. They use a tool called a pachymeter to see how thick the cornea is. They also use a topographer to make a map of the eye's surface. This map shows the shape and any bumps on the eye. The surgeon uses this map to plan exactly where to remove tissue. The patient might also use special eye drops to prevent infection.

This careful planning ensures the surgery is safe for the patient.

During the actual procedure, the surgeon follows a few specific steps. First, they use a tool called a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. This tool creates a very thin flap on the surface of the cornea. The surgeon carefully folds this flap back to show the tissue underneath. Then, an excimer laser is used to reshape the stroma. The stroma is the middle layer of the cornea. The laser removes tiny amounts of tissue to fix the vision.

Finally, the flap is put back in place to act as a natural bandage.

Scientists and doctors have worked on this for a long time. In the 1950s, a doctor named José Barraquer developed early techniques in Colombia. Later, in 1979, researchers at IBM discovered the excimer laser. They found it could etch tissue with great precision. In 1983, Steven Trokel suggested using this laser for eye surgery. Gholam A. Peyman also worked on this and received a patent in 1989.

These many steps helped make modern LASIK possible.

Many people around the world have used LASIK to see better. Between 1991 and 2016, more than 40 million procedures were done globally. In the United States, about 9.5 million people have had LASIK. The FDA says people 18 or older can have it. However, many doctors suggest waiting until age 21. This is because vision needs to stay stable for at least one year.

Most patients can return to their normal activities in just one or two days.
