Surgery works in many different ways. Some surgeons use medicine to treat a problem. For example, they might use antibiotics for diverticulitis. Other times, they use special tools to help a patient. A surgeon might use a tube to help a stomach. This is called nasogastric decompression. They also use fluid resuscitation to help the body. Many helpers work alongside the surgeon to make things go well.

In the past, surgery looked very different. In Europe, many surgeons were actually barber-surgeons. They used hair-cutting tools to do medical work. They often worked on battlefields for their employers. By the 19th century, barbers and surgeons became separate jobs. Most surgeons became fully qualified doctors by that time. In some places, surgeons use special titles. In many Commonwealth countries, they use the title Mr or Ms. This is a badge of honour for their training.

Today, surgery is a huge part of medicine. Surgeons perform over 300 million procedures every year. Many specialists help with different parts of the body. Some focus on the heart or the brain. Others work on teeth or even animal feet. People like anesthesiologists help patients stay still. Surgical nurses and assistants also provide important support. This teamwork helps surgeons do their hard jobs every day.
