Al-Zahrawi was one of the most important surgeons of the Middle Ages. He was an Arab physician and chemist from a place called al-Andalus.

He lived and worked in the city of Cordoba for most of his life. His work changed how doctors helped people during a very old time. He wanted to make surgery a respected part of medicine. He believed doctors must understand the whole body before they perform surgery.

His way of working involved careful study and many new inventions. Al-Zahrawi used many tools he designed himself to treat different parts of the body. He used catgut, which is thread made from animal guts, for stitches inside the body. This helped wounds heal on the inside. He also used tools to look inside the throat and the ear. He even developed ways to help with eye surgeries and childbirth.

By drawing these tools, he showed others exactly how to use them. This made his methods much easier for other doctors to learn.

Al-Zahrawi spent many years writing a huge medical encyclopedia. It is called the Kitab al-Tasrif and has thirty volumes.

The very last volume was his most famous work on surgery. He finished this massive project around the year 1000. He wrote it using his own long experience and his reading of old books. He even called his students "my children" in his writing. He believed all patients deserved good care, no matter how much money they had.

Many important facts about health came from his books. He was the first to explain that some illnesses, like haemophilia, can run in families. He also discovered the root cause of paralysis. Al-Zahrawi lived in the city of Azahara near Cordoba. He was born around the year 936.

He worked as a court physician for the ruler Al-Hakam II. He lived until about the year 1013. His life provided a bridge of knowledge between the East and the West.

His ideas stayed important for a very long time. In the twelfth century, a man named Gerard of Cremona translated his work into Latin. This allowed doctors in Europe to read his discoveries. His books became the main textbooks in famous universities like Salerno and Montpellier.
