The history of this land began with a major change. In 711, a commander named Tariq ibn-Ziyad led an army. He landed at Gibraltar with about 7,000 men. They won a big battle against King Roderic. After that, they brought most of the land under Muslim rule.

This took about seven years to complete. The land was part of the Umayyad Caliphate at first. It was organized into different administrative units to help manage the people.

Over time, the way the land was ruled changed many times. It started as a province of the Umayyad Caliphate. Later, it became the Emirate of Córdoba. Then, it became the Caliphate of Córdoba from 929 to 1031. After that, the land split into smaller states called taifas.

Al-Andalus was a bridge between different worlds. It helped share ideas between Islamic and Christian lands. This exchange helped many people learn new things.

However, there were also many years of conflict. Christian kingdoms in the north fought to take the land back. This period of fighting is often called the Reconquista. Slowly, the Muslim lands grew smaller and smaller. In 1287, most of the south had fallen to Christian rule. The last part, Granada, was surrendered in 1492.
