The taifas were many small, independent kingdoms in al-Andalus. Al-Andalus is the name for the land in modern Spain and Portugal. These kingdoms appeared after the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba fell apart. This large state had been one of the richest in Europe. Between the years 1009 and 1031, a civil war changed everything. This war was called the Fitna of al-Andalus.

As the big state broke, many small rival groups emerged. These groups were called taifas, which means "party" or "faction." They became a recurring part of history in this region.

Life in the taifas was full of both art and war. The rulers of these lands were often very smart. They did not always call themselves kings. Instead, they used the title hajib. This title meant they were acting for a leader who was away. These leaders wanted to show they were great. They built courts that were famous for being excellent.

They hired the best poets, scientists, and scholars. Because of this, culture and learning grew very quickly. Even though the big state was gone, thinking and art flourished.

History shows that the taifas rose and fell in waves. The first period began after the year 1031. During this time, about 33 independent taifas appeared. Some were very strong, like the taifa of Seville. Seville was very dynamic and even conquered its neighbors. Other strong places included Zaragoza, Toledo, and Badajoz.

A second period of taifas happened in the mid-12th century. This occurred when the Almoravid rulers began to decline. These cycles of rising and falling shaped the land for a long time.

Managing these small kingdoms was a very hard job. The taifas often fought wars with each other. They also faced pressure from Christian kingdoms in the north. To stay safe, some taifa rulers made deals. They paid large amounts of money, called tributes, to neighbors. Sometimes they even hired Christian mercenaries to fight for them.

Some taifas, like Badajoz and Toledo, even paid tribute to Alfonso VI. These alliances and payments were ways to survive in a changing world.

Eventually, the era of the taifas came to an end. Many taifas asked for help from North African warriors. They invited the Almoravid dynasty and the Almohad Caliphate. However, these groups did not just help the taifas. They actually took over the lands and made them part of their own empires. By the end of the 13th century, most taifas were gone. They were taken over by Christian states in the north.

Only one small kingdom remained, which was the Emirate of Granada.
