The Almohad Caliphate was a strong empire in North Africa. It ruled during the 12th and 13th centuries. This empire was led by a group of Berber Muslims. At its largest size, it controlled much of the Maghreb. It also ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula, which was called Al-Andalus.

This empire was important because it changed the history of many lands. It brought a new way of thinking to the region.

The movement started with a man named Ibn Tumart. He was part of the Masmuda tribes in the Atlas Mountains. He studied in Spain and Baghdad to learn about religion. He wanted to focus on the unity of God. His followers were called the Almohads.

After Ibn Tumart died in 1130, a new leader took over. His name was Abd al-Mu'min. He was a very skilled leader. He helped the Almohads grow much larger. In 1147, he captured the city of Marrakesh. This was a major win against the Almoravid dynasty. By 1159, the Almohads controlled almost all of the Maghreb.

They also moved into Al-Andalus by 1172.

Life in the empire involved many different groups of people. The Almohads had a complex way to organize their society. They had councils to help make decisions. They also had a large army with many specific roles. Some people were treasurers who collected taxes. Others were religious workers like muezzins.

Things began to change for the Almohads in 1212. A big battle happened at Las Navas de Tolosa. A group of Christian forces defeated the Almohad leader, Muhammad al-Nasir. Because of this loss, the empire began to lose its lands in Spain. Cities like Córdoba and Seville were lost in the years after.
