The Marinid dynasty was a powerful group that ruled much of North Africa.

They were originally part of the Zenata Berber tribe. These people were nomads who moved across large areas of land. They started in a region called the Zab, which is near modern-day Algeria. Later, they moved into what is now Morocco. The dynasty took its name from an ancestor named Marin ibn Wartajan al-Zenati. To help people accept their rule, they claimed they came from an Arab tribe.

Their rise to power began during the 13th century. At first, they served the Almohad dynasty. However, the Almohads grew weak after a big loss in 1212. The Marinids began to fight for control during this time. They moved through many cities like Taza, Rabat, and Meknes. In 1248, the leader Abu Yahya made Fez his capital city. By 1269, the leader Abu Yusuf Yaqub captured Marrakesh. This victory finally ended the rule of the Almohads.

At its peak, the empire was very large and organized.

During the rule of Abu al-Hasan Ali, the army was very strong. It had 40,000 Zenata cavalry riders. The sultan even had a personal bodyguard of 7,000 men. This group included people from many different places. The Marinids also tried to control trade near the Strait of Gibraltar. They held cities like Algeciras, Rota, Tarifa, and Gibraltar.

They made Fez a famous center for students and teachers. The leaders built many madrasas, which are special schools. One very famous building is the Al-Attarine Madrasa. They also built beautiful structures with detailed decorations.

These schools helped teach the Maliki version of Sunni Islam. This helped the leaders create a group of workers to run the state. The city of Fez became a very important place for ideas.

Eventually, the dynasty began to lose its strength. A big defeat happened at the Battle of Río Salado in 1340. This loss made it hard to keep land in the Iberian Peninsula. In the 1400s, the empire also faced a financial crisis. This meant the state did not have enough money to lead well. A related group called the Wattasids began to take control. Between 1420 and 1459, they acted as the real rulers. Finally, in 1465, a revolt in Fez ended the Marinid rule.
