The Idrisid dynasty was a powerful ruling family in North Africa. They ruled most of present-day Morocco and parts of western Algeria. This family lasted from the year 788 until 974. They were an Alid dynasty, which means they were descendants of Muhammad. Their rule was very important for the region. It helped spread Islam and Arab culture through Morocco. They also helped many Arab people move into major cities.

The story of the dynasty began with a man named Idris I. He fled to the Maghreb after the Battle of Fakhkh near Mecca. He arrived in the town of Volubilis in 788. The local Awraba Berber tribes welcomed him there. They made him their religious leader, also called an imam. Idris I worked to organize the people and build his authority. In 789, he started a new settlement called Medinat Fas. Sadly, Idris I was killed by an agent in 791.

After the first leader died, his son Idris II took over. He was only 11 years old when he became imam in 802. Idris II was a very strong ruler. He moved the capital from Volubilis to the city of Fez. He developed Fez into a major center for the state. He also welcomed many Arab settlers to the city. These people came from places like Cordoba and Tunisia. Because of this, Fez grew into a large Arab city.

Things became difficult after Idris II died in 828. His son Muhammad ruled next, but the land was divided. The kingdom was split into eight different pieces among many brothers. This caused many fights and revolts between family members. For a short time, the state was stable again. Leaders like Ali ibn Muhammad ruled well for many years. However, the dynasty began to face many hard jobs. Local tribes began to oppose their rule in the late 9th century.

In the 10th century, the Idrisids lost much of their power. They were caught in fights between two huge powers. These were the Fatimid Caliphate and the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba. The Idrisids were forced out of Fez in 927. They moved to a northern fort called Hajar an-Nasr. They tried to stay in power, but they faced many more attacks. Finally, in 974, they were removed from power completely. Many members of the family were taken to Córdoba as hostages.
