Abdallah ibn Yasin was a very important religious leader. He was a scholar of the Maliki school of Islam. He helped start a group called the Almoravid movement. This movement changed many parts of North Africa. He was born in a village called Tamanart. This place was near the edge of the desert.

Ibn Yasin spent his early years studying hard. He was a student of a man named Waggag ibn Zallu al-Lamti. They studied together in a Ribat. A Ribat is a religious school. In 1046, a leader named Yahya Ibn Ibrahim asked for help. He wanted someone to teach Islamic ways to the Berbers. Waggag chose Ibn Yasin for this big job.

He worked to bring different tribes together. He joined the Lamtuna, Masufa, and Godala tribes. This group became the Almoravid alliance. Ibn Yasin was the spiritual leader of the group. Yahya ibn Umar was the military leader. In 1054, they conquered the city of Sijilmasa. This was a major step for their movement.

Ibn Yasin had very strict rules for his followers. He wanted people to follow orthodox Sunnism. He forbade things like wine and music. He also removed certain old taxes. He gave one fifth of war spoils to religious experts. These strict ways caused some people to revolt. A revolt happened in 1055 because of these rules.

His life ended during a difficult time. Yahya ibn Umar died during a revolt in 1056. Ibn Yasin then chose Abu-Bakr Ibn-Umar as the new military leader. Ibn Yasin died on July 7, 1059. He died while trying to reach the Atlantic coast. Today, his grave is near the Krifla River in Morocco. A mosque and a tomb still stand there.
