Musa ibn Nusayr was a famous Arab general and governor. He lived during a time of great change in the world. He served the Umayyad caliphs, who were the leaders of a large empire. Musa was responsible for ruling the province of Ifriqiya in North Africa.

He also led armies to expand his empire into new lands. His work changed the map of the world for many years.

Musa was known for being a very clever leader. When he worked with the Berber people, he did not use force to make them change. Instead, he used diplomacy, which means he used talk and respect. This was a very successful way to lead. Because of this, many Berbers joined his army as soldiers. One of these men was Tariq bin Ziyad.

Musa also built a navy to protect his lands and reach new islands.

Historians have different ideas about where Musa came from. Some say his family belonged to the Lakhmid clan. Others say he was from the Banu Bakr group. One story says his father was an Arab Christian. His father was once a captive in the city of Ayn al-Tamr in 633. Later, his father became free and served a leader named Abd al-Aziz. Musa was born around the year 640. He grew up in a place called Syria.

Musa's most famous work was the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. This area includes parts of modern Spain and France.

He sent Tariq bin Ziyad across the sea with 7,000 men. They landed at a place now called Gibraltar. Later, Musa arrived with his own army of 18,000 men. They fought many battles against the Visigoth kingdom. Musa took the city of Seville after a siege that lasted three months. He also took the city of Mérida after five months of fighting.

After the conquest, Musa and Tariq returned to the city of Damascus. They brought many riches and treasures with them. The people in Damascus thought they were very popular. However, things became difficult for Musa when a new leader took power. This leader, Sulayman, took away Musa's rank and his wealth. Musa died around the year 715 or 716 while on a holy trip called the Hajj.

Even though his life ended sadly, people still remember him. A mountain in North Africa is even named Jebel Musa in his honor.
