Tariq ibn Ziyad was a famous military leader. He was a Berber commander for the Umayyad Caliphate. This was a large and strong land. He is best known for leading a group of soldiers into a new area. This area is called the Iberian Peninsula. Today, we know these places as Spain and Portugal. His actions changed the history of that part of the world forever.

His journey began with a crossing of the sea. He led his troops from the coast of North Africa. They traveled across the Strait of Gibraltar. The army landed at the base of a large mountain. This mountain was named Jabal Tariq in Arabic. This name means "mountain of Tariq." Over many years, the name changed into the word Gibraltar.

Historians have many different ideas about his early life. Some say he was from a Berber tribe in Algeria. Others believe he was born in the Wadi Tafna region. He served under a governor named Musa ibn Nusayr. Musa made Tariq the governor of a place called Tangier. This happened around the years 710 or 711. Tariq led an army of about 7,000 soldiers. Most of these men were Berbers, but some were Arabs.

In 711, Tariq faced a very large army. This army was led by a king named Roderic. Some sources say Roderic had 100,000 soldiers. Tariq won a major victory at the Battle of Guadalete. This battle happened on July 19. After the win, Tariq split his men into four groups. They captured many cities like Córdoba and Toledo. Tariq himself led the group that took the city of Toledo.

Life changed for many people after these battles. Tariq and Musa eventually took two-thirds of the land. In 714, the leader in Damascus called them both home. They went back and lived there for their remaining years. Some stories say Tariq and Musa had disagreements. Other stories say they were friends who made up. Tariq remains a very important figure in history books today.
