Yusuf ibn Tashfin was a powerful leader of the Almoravid Empire. He was a Berber man from the Sanhaja group. He was known for being a very effective general. Yusuf helped build the famous city of Marrakesh in Morocco. He made this city the capital of his large empire.

He was a man who preferred simple life over fancy courts. He did not care for the luxury found in some palaces. This helped him lead his people with a strong focus.

Yusuf built a huge and diverse army to expand his lands. His soldiers included many different groups of people. He had Saharan tribes like the Lamtuna and the Masufa. He also used Christian mercenaries and Sudanese soldiers.

His troops used many tools like bows, arrows, and pikes. They carried shields made of leather with iron spikes. Some soldiers even used large catapults during sieges. His cavalry included 6,000 troops on white Arabian horses.

In the year 1061, Yusuf took a special title. He was called Amir al-Muslimin, which means Leader of the Muslims. He worked to grow his empire across North Africa. He captured Fez in 1075 and Tangier in 1079.

He also took Tlemcen in 1080 and Ceuta in 1083. Later, he captured Algiers, Ténès, and Oran. These victories made the Almoravid Empire very strong.

Later, Yusuf traveled to al-Andalus to help Muslim leaders. A king named Alfonso VI was taking their land. In 1086, Yusuf led a big fight at the Battle of Sagrajas.

He brought 15,000 men to help the local fighters. His army also included 10,000 fighters from local provinces. This victory stopped the Christian advance for a time. Yusuf also worked hard to capture the city of Valencia. He finally won control of Valencia after a long siege.

Yusuf wanted to unite the many small Muslim kingdoms. He felt the local rulers were not following Islamic law. He took power from many emirs to bring them together.

He ruled from his court in Marrakesh for many years. His son, Ali ibn Yusuf, took over after him. Ali continued to support important places like the University of Al-Karaouine. The Almoravid dynasty ruled for a time before other groups arrived. Yusuf's life changed the history of North Africa and Spain.
