Tariq ibn Ziyad was a Berber leader. He lived a long time ago. He served Musa ibn Nusayr. Musa was a governor in North Africa.

In the year 711, Tariq led an army to a new land. This land is now Spain and Portugal. He crossed a sea to get there. His men landed at the foot of a mountain. People named the mountain after him. In Arabic, it was called Jabal Tariq. Today, we call it Gibraltar.

Tariq had about 7,000 soldiers. Many were Berbers. They fought a large army led by a king named Roderic. The two sides fought a big battle at Guadalete. Tariq won the battle.

Tariq split his army into four parts. His men took many cities. They took places like Córdoba and Toledo. Tariq was the leader of this land for a year. Later, Musa came with more troops. Together, they took much of the land. In 714, both men went back home to Damascus. They lived there for the rest of their lives.
