Jahm bin Safwan was a thinker from a long time ago. He was born in Samarkand. Later, he lived in a place called Merv. Jahm had many ideas about God. He taught that God has certain traits. He believed God has power and can make things. But he thought God does not speak. Because of this, he said the Qur'an was created. This was a very big idea.

Jahm also had ideas about how people act. He believed God makes everything happen. He used the sun as an example. He said people say the sun sets. But he thought it is actually God who makes it set.

Many other scholars disagreed with him. They had big debates in mosques. Some scholars, like Muqatil ibn Sulayman, were his rivals. They even wrote books to argue against him. Many people in the Sunni tradition also spoke against his views. Even though he left no books of his own, people still study his ideas today. His name is linked to a group called the Jahmiyya.
