The Mu'tazila were a group of thinkers in early Islamic history. Their name comes from a word that means to withdraw or stay apart. One story says the name began when a man named Wasil ibn Ata left his teacher. He had a different idea about sin. He started his own group of students.

This group had many big ideas. They believed in the oneness of God. They also believed that God is just. They thought humans have free will. This means people choose their own actions. They believed people could use reason to understand faith. To them, reason could help show what is good or bad.

At times, their ideas were very powerful. Some leaders made Mu'tazila ideas the main law. This led to a hard time called the Mihna. For 18 years, scholars were punished if they did not agree. Some were even killed. Later, new leaders changed the rules. They stopped forcing these ideas on others. Today, some people still follow parts of these old ideas.
