Atharism is a way of thinking in Sunni Islam. It began a long time ago. People who follow this way are called Atharis. They look for the plain meaning of holy texts. These texts are the Quran and the hadith. The hadith are stories about the Prophet Muhammad.

Atharis believe these texts are the only true guides. They do not use human logic to explain them. They do not use metaphors to describe God. Instead, they accept the words exactly as they are. They believe the true meaning belongs to God alone.

This group grew around a leader named Ahmad ibn Hanbal. He lived in the 800s. He was a very strong leader. He faced many hard times for his beliefs. He even went through torture to stay true to his faith. He believed the Quran was not a created thing. He said it had always existed with God.

Many scholars follow these ways. Some belong to the Hanbali school of law. Others come from different groups. They want to stay close to the old ways of the past.
