It is one of four main Sunni groups. It is the smallest of these four groups. Most Hanbali followers live in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. They make up about 1% or 2% of Muslims worldwide.

A man named Ahmad ibn Hanbal started this school. He wanted to follow the Quran very closely. He also used the Hadith. The Hadith are stories about Muhammad.

He believed in a literal way of reading these texts. He did not want people to use personal opinions to make laws. He thought this could lead to mistakes.

Later, the school changed in some ways. A movement called Wahhabism grew in the 1700s. It helped spread Hanbali ideas to more places. Some followers also began to use the term Salafi.
