The Hanbali school is one of the four major ways of following Islamic law.

It belongs to the Sunni tradition of Islam. This school is the smallest of the four main groups. It makes up about 1% to 2% of the global Muslim population. Most Hanbali followers live in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. They follow a specific way of thinking called the Athari creed. This tradition focuses on staying very close to original religious teachings.

This school uses specific sources to find answers about how to live. The two main sources are the Quran and the Hadith. The Hadith are records of the actions and sayings of Muhammad.

If the texts do not have a clear answer, they look at other things. They prefer the consensus of Muhammad's companions, known as the Sahaba. They may also look at weaker Hadiths or use analogy. Unlike other schools, they do not like using personal opinions to make laws. They believe this keeps the religion pure and avoids mistakes.

Ahmad ibn Hanbal founded this school many years ago. He was a student of the scholar Al-Shafi'i. Ibn Hanbal was very careful about how people read holy texts. He wanted people to use a literal interpretation of the Quran. He did not want leaders to change meanings to please wealthy people. He also wrote a large text called Al-Musnad. This book contains over 30,000 sayings and actions of Muhammad. His student, Abu Bakr al-Khallal, helped preserve these many views later on.

The history of the school has seen many big changes. In the 18th century, the Wahhabi movement began a great reformation. Its founder was Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. He worked with the House of Saud to spread these teachings. Some later scholars, like Ibn Baz, even questioned following the school too strictly. In the 10th century, the school had difficult times in Baghdad. A leader named Al-Hasan ibn 'Ali al-Barbahari led groups that caused public chaos. Because of this, the Caliph Ar-Radi ended the state's support for the school in 935.

Today, the Hanbali school connects to many different ideas. Some followers use the term "Salafi" to describe their theological views. This idea was strongly supported by the 13th-century thinker Ibn Taymiyya. While the school started with very strict rules, it has become more flexible. Modern Hanbali scholars use a principle called Maslaha, which means public interest. This helps them answer new questions in the modern world. They can now look at what is best for the community to find solutions.
