Wahhabism is a movement within Sunni Islam.

It is often called a revivalist or reform movement. Many followers see it as a way to return to pure monotheistic worship. They want to reach the original message of the Prophet. This means they try to remove new customs from the faith. These customs are sometimes called innovations. Some people call the movement puritanical. Others say it is a way to fix social and moral life. It is a topic that many people discuss today.

This movement works by looking back at history for guidance. Followers focus on the first three generations of Muslims. They believe these early people practiced the faith most purely. They often look to the works of Hanbali scholars. Two famous names are Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn al-Qayyim. These scholars lived a long time ago. The movement also rejects certain old ways of doing things. For example, they spoke against visiting the tombs of saints. They also spoke against certain types of pilgrimages to shrines.

The history of this movement began in the 18th century. It started in the Najd region of the Arabian Peninsula. A scholar named Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab founded it. In 1744, he made a very important pact. He joined with a local leader named Muhammad bin Saud. This created a religious and political alliance. This partnership lasted for more than 250 years. It helped shape the history of the Saudi states.

Many facts surround the growth of this movement. It was the official policy of Saudi Arabia until 2022. The movement was once a major revolt against foreign empires. This included the Turkish and Persian empires. It even inspired people as far away as West Africa. However, the name "Wahhabism" is often a point of debate. The term was likely first used by a critic named Sulayman ibn Abd al-Wahhab. Most followers do not like the name. They prefer to call themselves Salafi or Muwahhidun. Muwahhidun means "the monotheists."

Today, the movement is changing in new ways. In 2017, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman began new policies. These changes led to crackdowns on certain groups. By 2021, the power of religious clerics began to wane. Some people call this the "post-Wahhabi era" of Saudi Arabia. The country now celebrates a founding day on 22 February. This day marks the start of Muhammad ibn Saud's rule in 1727. It focuses less on the old pact from 1744. This shows how much the region is evolving.
