To the north, it is near Jordan and the Gulf of Suez. To the south, it meets the country of Yemen. The region is also bordered by the Najd land to the east. Hejaz is a special place because it contains two of the holiest cities in Islam. These cities are Mecca and Medina. Because of these cities, the area is a major center for history and religion.

The name Hejaz comes from an Arabic word that means "to separate." This name is perfect because the land acts like a divider. It separates the Najd land in the east from the Tihamah land in the west. The landscape here is very interesting to look at. You might see the mountains of the Sarat range. The ground often has dark sand because of old volcanoes. There are more than 2,000 dormant volcanoes in the area. These volcanic fields, called harrāt, are huge. They cover an area larger than the state of Missouri.

In ancient times, a river system once flowed through the area toward the Persian Gulf. This river was active between 2500 and 3000 BCE. The region was also part of the Roman province of Arabia Petraea. Later, many great empires ruled the land. These included the Rashidun, Umayyad, and Abbasid Caliphates. The Ottoman Empire also held control for a long time.

Many different groups of people have lived in Hejaz throughout history. The region was once an independent state called the Kingdom of Hejaz. In 1925, it was joined with the neighboring Nejd. This led to the creation of the unified Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.

They often use a local way of speaking called the Hejazi dialect. People here are often described as cosmopolitan.
