The Islamic New Year is a very important time. It marks the start of a new Hijri year. This day is also called the Hijri New Year. Most Muslims observe this day on the first of Muharram. This is the first month of the Islamic year. It is a time to mark a new year count.

Many people around the world celebrate this day. In fact, 24 countries recognize it as a public holiday. This includes places like Egypt and Indonesia. It is also a holiday in Morocco and Malaysia.

This calendar works in a special way. It is a lunar calendar. This means it follows the cycles of the moon. A new day does not start at midnight. Instead, a day begins at sunset. This changes how people track time. For example, 1 Muharram 1432 AH began at sunset on 6 December 2010. It lasted until the next sunset.

Different groups use different methods to find the date. Some people look for the new moon in the sky. Other groups use math called astronomical calculations.

The history of this calendar is very old. It began with a major event called the Hijrah. This was when Muhammad and his followers moved. They moved from Mecca to Medina. This move happened in the year 622 CE. This year is the start of the Islamic era.

Some people have different views on this history. Twelver Shia Muslims believe the new year is in Rabi' al-Awwal. They believe this is the month the Hijrah took place. This can lead to different dates for history. For instance, they may name years differently for certain battles.

There are many specific facts about how dates are set. Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura calendar. This calendar uses math to find future dates. This specific scheme started in 1423 AH. That was on 15 March 2002. Other places might see the moon at different times. This can cause a one or two day difference. Because of this, dates vary between countries.

Some countries use sightings while others use math. This is why the dates are not always the same.

This calendar is different from the one we use every day. The Islamic year is shorter than the solar year. It is about eleven to twelve days shorter. Because of this, the date changes every year. It does not stay on the same day. For example, the year 1446 AH starts on 8 July 2024. The year 1447 AH will start on 26 June 2025. The year 1448 AH is estimated for 16 June 2026.

People use this calendar for many religious duties. It helps them know when to pray or fast. It also helps them find holy festivals.
