For Muslims, this journey is a very important religious duty. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. This means it is a core part of their faith. Every adult Muslim should try to go at least once in their life. They must be physically able to make the trip. They must also have enough money to pay for it. They must also be able to support their families while they are away.

First, pilgrims enter a state of holiness called Ihram. Men wear two pieces of unstitched white cloth. This shows that everyone is equal before God. This clothing helps people focus on spirituality rather than wealth. Next, they walk around the Kaaba seven times in a counter-clockwise direction. This building is a cube-shaped structure. They also walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times. They drink from the Zamzam Well and stand on the plains of Mount Arafat.

The history of Hajj goes back a very long time. Many rituals connect to the life of the prophet Muhammad from the 7th century. However, the tradition also traces back to the time of Abraham. Islamic tradition says Abraham built the Kaaba with his son Ishmael.

Some stories say the archangel Gabriel brought the Black Stone from Heaven. Muhammad led his followers to Mecca in AD 630. He cleansed the Kaaba of idols and dedicated it to God. He performed his own pilgrimage in AD 632. This established the way the Hajj is done today.

Millions of people travel to Mecca every year for this event.

Between the years 2000 and 2019, the average number of visitors was about 2,269,145 per year. In 2012, the number of participants reached a high of 3,161,573. Most of these people come from outside of Saudi Arabia. In June 2020, the Saudi government limited the number of pilgrims due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The dates for Hajj change every year. This is because the Islamic calendar is based on the moon. The lunar year is about eleven or twelve days shorter than the solar year.

Many different traditions and paths lead to this sacred time. In the past, large groups traveled in caravans. These caravans often had thousands of people. They sometimes had military escorts and doctors to keep them safe. Travelers like Ibn Battuta wrote about these long journeys. Some people also perform a shorter pilgrimage called Umrah. Umrah can happen at any time of the year. However, Umrah does not replace the duty of the Hajj. The Hajj remains a central way for Muslims to show their faith and unity.
