The qibla is a very important direction for Muslims. It points toward the Kaaba, which is a cube-shaped building. This building sits in the center of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca.

Many people believe the Kaaba was built by the prophets Abraham and Ishmael. For Muslims, the qibla is used in many different religious ways. It is the direction people face during their daily prayers, called salah.

It is also used when people enter a sacred state for the Hajj pilgrimage. Some people even turn animals toward this direction during Islamic slaughter.

There are many ways to find the qibla. Most mosques have a special wall niche called a mihrab. This niche shows the direction people should face to pray.

Astronomers use a math rule called a great circle to find it. A great circle is a path on the Earth's sphere. This path is the shortest way to get from one place to the Kaaba.

People can use mobile apps or special compasses to help them. You can even use the shadow of a rod to find it. This works when the sun is directly over Mecca in May and July.

History shows that the qibla has changed over time. Before the second Hijri year, Muhammad and his followers prayed toward Jerusalem.

This was the same direction used by the Jews in Medina. Later, verses from the Quran were revealed to Muhammad. These verses commanded people to turn toward the Sacred Mosque instead. This change happened during a prayer ritual in Medina. A place called the Masjid al-Qiblatayn marks where this event occurred. This mosque is known as the Mosque of the Two Qiblas.

Finding the exact direction can be quite hard. If you are very far from Mecca, even a small mistake matters. For example, a tiny error in Jakarta could change the direction a lot.

Because of this, many scholars say it is okay to face the general direction. They believe it is fine if you cannot find the exact path. Some people think facing the qibla is only required if you are able. This helps people who are traveling or in difficult situations. It makes sure that the rules are possible for everyone to follow.

Even in space, people think about the qibla. In 2007, an astronaut named Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor went to the International Space Station.

This made people wonder which way to face in orbit. The religious leaders in Malaysia said he should do what is possible. This shows how the qibla remains important in modern life. Whether using ancient stars or new technology, the direction connects people. It helps them feel connected to the holy site in Mecca. Even today, historical mosques with different directions still stand around the world.
