Ibadah is a special Arabic word. It means service or servitude. In the religion of Islam, it is often translated as worship. This word is linked to ideas like obedience and humility. It describes a way of showing devotion to God. Some people use the word to mean more than just prayer.

For some thinkers, it includes how a person acts every day. This means keeping speech free from lies or mean words. It also means being fair in business and kind to family members. Following these rules is a way to practice ibadah.

There are specific rules for these religious acts. These rules are called ibadat. This word is the plural form of ibadah. Ibadat refers to the laws that govern worship. These laws are part of Islamic jurisprudence, which is a system of rules. Ibadat is different from other rules about how people trade or interact. These religious duties are for Muslims who are adults. They must also be of sound body and mind.

Following these rules helps the religion stay strong and steady.

Islam has five main pillars that are part of ibadat. The first pillar is the Shahada. This is a declaration of faith. It says there is no god but God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God. The second pillar is Salat. This is a ritual prayer done five times every day.

These prayers happen at set times. They include special cleansing and specific movements. People might stand, bow, sit, or prostrate during prayer.

Other pillars include Zakat and Sawm. Zakat is the act of almsgiving. It is usually 2.5% of a person's savings and wealth. This is calculated above a certain amount called nisab. Sawm is the practice of fasting. This happens especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

During the day, people refrain from eating and drinking. The fifth pillar is the Hajj. This is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

It is a duty for adults who are physically and financially able. They should make this journey at least once in their lives.

These practices are very central to the Muslim community. Because they are so important, they are studied first in many collections. Experts say that these laws are vital for the faith. Without these rules, people might create their own different rituals. This could cause the religion of Islam to falter or disappear. By following ibadat, followers keep their traditions the same. This connects the history of the faith to the people living today.
