The word comes from an Arabic root that means to purify. Many people believe this act purifies their income and wealth. It is seen as a way to make possessions pleasing to God. In the Quran, zakat is ranked as very important. It is placed right after prayer in terms of importance.

How does zakat work for a person? It is based on the extra money someone has left. This is the amount remaining after all essential needs are met. To pay, a person must have wealth above a minimum level. This specific amount is called the nisab.

Most people customarily pay 2.5% of their disposable income. This is usually calculated over one lunar year. Some people choose the month of Ramadan to do this. They believe charitable acts have more spiritual meaning during that time.

History shows that zakat has always been a major part of life. The Quran mentions zakat in many different verses. These verses were used as early as the Makkan period. In the early Medinan suras, it was described as an obligation. The payment of zakat has even played a role in history. It was a major factor during the Ridda wars.

Some historical leaders used force to collect it. This was done to ensure people followed religious orders.

There are specific rules about who receives the money. The Quran mentions eight categories of people who can benefit. These groups include the poor and the needy. They also include orphans and widows. Other groups are people in debt and stranded travelers. Zakat collectors can also receive funds. Some funds go to those being freed from slavery. There are also provisions for the aged who cannot work. Scholars have many different ideas about these rules. They may disagree on how to handle business assets or jewelry.

Today, the way zakat is handled varies by country. In many Muslim-majority countries, it is a voluntary act. However, in places like Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, the state collects it. In Libya, Pakistan, Sudan, and Yemen, it is also mandated. Shias often view zakat as a private action. They may give it to collectors sponsored by an imam. This shows how different traditions can practice the same duty. Many people now use online tools to help them estimate their payments.
