Charitable organization

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A charitable organization is a group built to help others. These groups focus on philanthropy, which is the desire to promote the good of others. They aim to spread social well-being through things like education or religious activities. Most charities must follow rules to ensure they serve the public interest. They are not allowed to use their funds to make a profit for individuals. Instead, they use money for the common good.

Charities work by collecting money to support specific causes. This money can come from donations by businesses or from people. They might sell goods or services to raise funds. Some groups also use money from investments to keep going. Experts look at these financial figures to see if a charity is sustainable. Sustainability means the group can keep working for a long time. This information helps people decide if they want to donate.

Helping others is an ancient practice. Long ago, most charity came from religious groups. For example, Islam has a pillar called Zakāt. Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism also have traditions of giving. In the 10th century, King Athelstan of England founded an almshouse in York. An almshouse was a home for poor or distressed people. These early systems provided housing, health care, and even education.

During the Enlightenment, new kinds of charities appeared. In 1741, Captain Thomas Coram started the Foundling Hospital in London. This was the first group of its kind to care for orphans. In 1756, Jonas Hanway started The Marine Society to help sailors. By 1763, this group had helped over 10,000 men. Later, in the 1800s, groups like the Labourer's Friend Society helped the working class. Andrew Carnegie was a very famous philanthropist in America. He gave away over 90% of his wealth to build libraries and schools.

Charity has changed a lot as the world changed. In the 20th century, groups like Oxfam and Amnesty International became huge. They now work in many different countries at once. Today, the internet has changed how we give. People can use social media or websites like GoFundMe to help. This is called crowdfunding, where many people give small amounts online. It makes helping others easier than ever before.
