An organization is a group of people working together for a specific purpose.

This could be a large company or a small club. Some groups are formal, like a government or a school. Other groups might be informal, like a group of friends with a shared goal. Organizations can even be secret or illegal, such as certain resistance movements. They help people solve big tasks that one person cannot do alone. By working together, people can add new features or make things much bigger.

There are different ways to set up an organization. One way is using a committee or a jury. In a committee, a group of peers makes decisions by voting. Juries are a type of committee used in courts to decide things like guilt. Another way is the ecology structure. In this type, parts of the group compete with each other. Effective parts get more work while inefficient parts may fail. This is similar to how things work in nature.

Some organizations use a matrix structure. In this setup, every worker has two different bosses. One boss is a specialist who helps them with their specific skills. The other boss is an executive who helps them finish a project. This method helps experts work on many different tasks at once. The United States aerospace industry was the first to use this officially. They began using it in the early 1960s.

Many groups also use a pyramid shape called a hierarchy.

In a hierarchy, one leader stands at the top. This leader has the authority to give commands to others. The name comes from the idea of a stone pyramid. If the bottom blocks are not strong, the top will fall. This shows how much a leader needs the support of their members. A book called The Peter Principle was written about this in 1969.

Learning about organizations is a big part of many sciences. Sociologists study how these groups act within society. Economists look at how groups use a division of labor. This means people specialize in different jobs to be more efficient. This specialization makes coordination very important for the group. While groups are helpful, they can sometimes be slow to change. This happens because they must coordinate all their different parts.
