Airline

technology Maturity 13-18 Next article →

An airline is a company that provides air transportation. They use aircraft to move passengers or freight, which is another word for cargo. Some airlines only focus on moving freight. Other airlines carry passengers and also keep cargo in the belly of the plane.

To operate, these companies must have an air operating certificate. This is a license from a government aviation body. Airlines can be scheduled or they can be charter operators.

How an airline works has changed over many years. Before the 1930s, most airlines were owned by individuals. From the 1940s to the 1980s, many major airlines were owned by governments. After the mid-1980s, many became private companies again.

Today, many airlines join together in large groups called alliances. The biggest ones are Star Alliance, SkyTeam, and Oneworld. These groups help by sharing passenger programs like lounges. They also use codesharing, which means two airlines offer the same flight.

Another very old company is the Compagnie générale transaérienne, or CGT. It was founded on October 10, 1909. CGT began moving cargo in April 1911. It started regular passenger flights in March 1913. These were weekly return flights using fixed-wing aircraft. CGT was one of the companies that later merged to become Air France.

Many famous airlines grew from these early days. The Dutch airline KLM was founded on October 7, 1919. It is the oldest airline still using its original name.

In the Soviet Union, the airline Aeroflot became very large. By the end of the 1930s, Aeroflot was the largest airline in the world. It had about 3,000 aircraft and 60,000 service workers.

Traveling by air connects different parts of the world. Early airlines helped people reach far-away places. For example, Imperial Airways helped connect the British Empire.

In 1931, the airship Graf Zeppelin flew passengers to South America. In 1936, the airship Hindenburg also flew passengers across the Atlantic.

Even today, airlines change how we travel. In the 1990s, new budget airlines like EasyJet and Ryanair became popular. This changed how people fly on shorter routes.
