technology Maturity 13-18 Next article →

An airline is a company that flies. They use aircraft, or planes, to move people. They also carry cargo, which means heavy goods or boxes.

Some airlines only move cargo. Other airlines carry both people and goods. They often keep boxes in the belly of the plane. To fly, airlines need a special license from the government.

Airlines have changed a lot over time. In the early days, some used airships. These were very large flying machines. One airship even flew across the Atlantic Ocean in 1919.

Today, many airlines work in groups. These groups are called alliances. They help travelers by sharing services. They might share lounges, which are waiting rooms. They also share flight routes. This makes it easier to travel far away.
