technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An airliner is a special type of airplane. Its main job is to carry passengers and air cargo from one place to another.

Most modern airliners are jet powered. They have a long, tube-shaped body called a fuselage.

You might see very large planes called wide-body jets. These have two separate aisles for people to walk through. They are used for long-haul flights between big cities.

Smaller planes are called narrow-body jets. They have only one aisle and fly shorter distances.

Airliners work in different ways depending on their size. Large wide-body jets carry many people on very long trips.

Regional airliners are smaller and carry fewer than 100 passengers. Some use turbofans or turboprops to fly.

Even smaller planes are called commuter aircraft or air taxis. A Beechcraft 1900 is an example of this. It only has 19 seats.

These small planes help move people into large airline hubs. This creates a system that looks like a hub and spoke model.

People have been working to improve flight for a long time. The Wright brothers flew the first sustained flight in 1903.

In 1913, Igor Sikorsky built the Russky Vityaz. This was a large plane with many engines.

He later made the Ilya Muromets. It had a comfortable cabin with heating and lights. It even had a lavatory for passengers. It first flew in December 1913. By February 1914, it carried 16 passengers. However, the First World War changed how these planes were used.

Many famous planes arrived during the early 20th century. In 1919, the French Farman F.60 Goliath began flying passengers. It could hold up to 14 people.

The Junkers F.13 was the first all-metal transport aircraft. It was built between 1919 and 1932.

In the 1930s, the Douglas DC-3 became very important. It could carry between 21 and 32 passengers.

This plane was one of the first to make money without help from the government. Large flying boats like the Boeing 314 also flew across oceans. One Boeing 314 even flew around the whole world in 1941 and 1942.

Today, airliners connect the whole world. You can fly on a tiny plane or a huge jet.

Some planes are designed to carry many bags in a baggage compartment.

Other planes have special overhead bins for your things.

Modern jets like the Airbus A320 are very common.

They help people travel quickly to new places. It is amazing to think how far we have come since 1903.
