Fixed-wing aircraft

Fixed-wing aircraft are machines that fly through the air using aerodynamic lift.

This lift is an upward force created by the wings. Unlike helicopters, which use spinning rotors, these machines have wings that stay in a fixed position. Some wings are rigid, while others can change shape or move.

Kites are a very early type of fixed-wing craft. Gliders also belong to this group because they use moving air to gain altitude. Some aircraft even use engines to create thrust, which is the power that pushes them forward.

How these machines work depends on their design. A glider moves through the air without an engine to stay aloft.

A powered airplane uses an engine to move forward. This forward motion helps the wings create the lift needed to fly.

Some planes are seaplanes that can land on water. A float plane uses large floats to stay above the surface.

A flying boat uses a watertight hull to rest directly on the water. Other machines, called ground effect vehicles, fly very close to the ground.

Humans have been studying flight for a very long time. Kites were used in China about 2,800 years ago.

By 549 AD, people were using paper kites to send rescue messages. In Greece, a man named Archytas reportedly built a steam-powered device around 400 BC.

Much later, Sir George Cayley described the modern airplane in 1799. He thought about how to use lift, propulsion, and control together.

He even built a glider that could carry a person in 1853.

Many inventors worked hard to make powered flight a reality. In 1903, the Wright brothers achieved the first sustained and controlled powered flight.

Their machine was called the Flyer I. In 1906, Alberto Santos Dumont flew the 14 bis.

This flight was the first to be recognized by the Aéro-Club de France. Later, the Bell X-1 became the first plane to fly faster than sound in 1947.

The Boeing 747 was also a famous giant, serving as the world's largest passenger plane from 1970 until 2005.

Today, we see fixed-wing aircraft in almost every part of life. They carry people across oceans and deliver goods to far places.

Others are built for fun, like hang gliders or powered paragliders.

Most of these machines are steered by a pilot in a cockpit.

However, some modern aircraft can fly themselves without any pilot at all. They use technology to stay on their path through the sky.
