Biplane

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A biplane is a fixed-wing aircraft with two main wings stacked one above the other.

This design was very important in the early years of flying. Even the Wright Flyer, the first powered aeroplane to fly, used this wing arrangement. While a biplane is very strong, it does have some downsides. The two wings create more drag, which is the air resistance that pulls against a plane. This happens because the wings interfere with each other's airflow. The high pressure under the top wing and the low pressure above the bottom wing can cancel each other out.

How does a biplane work to stay in the air? The two wings work together to provide lift. However, they do not provide twice the lift of a single wing. This is because they are working on nearly the same part of the atmosphere. To keep the wings steady, engineers use struts and wires. Struts are the poles that connect the wings. Wires, called rigging, are used to keep the structure from flexing. There are different types of wires like lift wires and landing wires. Lift wires prevent the wings from folding up during flight.

Many biplanes use a design called stagger to work better. Stagger means the wings are not perfectly lined up. In positive stagger, the upper wing is moved forward. This can help reduce drag or help the pilot see better.

Some planes use negative stagger, where the lower wing is moved forward. This is often done for structural reasons or visibility. You can see this in planes like the Sopwith Dolphin. Designers also used bays to organize the structure. A bay is the space between a set of struts. A single-bay biplane like the Fokker D.VII has one set of struts on each side.

History shows us why the biplane was so popular for a long time. Early engines did not have much power. This meant planes had to fly at low speeds. Biplanes were great because they could have a large wing area without being too long. This helped them stay in the air easily. Most fighter aircraft remained biplanes until the mid-1930s. As engines got stronger, monoplanes became better. Monoplanes have less drag and are better for high speeds. By the late 1930s, the biplane was mostly obsolete for most uses.

There is also a special type of biplane called a sesquiplane. The name comes from a Latin word meaning "one-and-a-half wings."

In these planes, one wing is much smaller than the other. Usually, the lower wing is the smaller one. This helps the plane stay light and reduce drag. The Nieuport 17 is a famous example of this design. These planes were very good at climbing and turning. Even today, some people still build special sports biplanes for aerobatics. It is a fascinating way to design a flying machine.
