A biplane is a plane with two main wings.

These wings are stacked one above the other. This design makes the plane very strong. It also keeps the plane light.

Early planes had weak engines. They needed to fly at low speeds. A biplane has a large wing area. This helps the plane stay in the air. It also makes the plane easy to turn.

To stay stiff, biplanes use struts and wires. Struts are the poles between the wings. Wires help hold the wings in place. Some planes use a special wing shape. This is called stagger. Positive stagger means the top wing is moved forward.

A special kind of biplane is a sesquiplane. This name means "one-and-a-half wings."

In this plane, the bottom wing is much smaller. This helps reduce weight and drag. Many planes used this style in the past. Some people still fly them today!
