Otto Lilienthal was a German inventor. People call him the "father of flight."

He wanted to make human flight a reality. He studied how birds fly to learn. He looked closely at how storks move their wings.

This helped him design better wings for his machines.

Lilienthal built many different gliders. A glider is a flying machine with no engine.

He used his own body to steer them. He would shift his weight to move the wings. This is a way to change the center of gravity. This means he moved the balance point of the machine. He made over 2,000 successful flights. Some of his flights were very long. One flight in 1893 went 250 meters.

In 1896, something went wrong. His glider stalled. A stall happens when a wing loses its lift. He could not get control back. He fell from a high hill. He died the next day from his injuries.

Even so, his work helped all future pilots. He showed that humans could fly through the air.
