Otto Lilienthal was a famous German inventor who changed how we see the sky. Many people call him the "father of flight" because he proved humans could fly in machines.

Before him, people were not sure if heavy machines could stay in the air. He showed the world that heavier-than-air flight was possible. His work was so important that it influenced many other scientists. He even started the first airplane production company in the world.

To learn how to fly, Lilienthal studied the natural world. He spent a lot of time watching how birds move.

He especially studied the flight of white storks. He used this information to design better wings. He built many different types of gliders, which are flying machines without engines. To steer his gliders, he had to shift his own body weight. This changed the center of gravity, or the balance point, of the machine.

Lilienthal began his serious flight experiments in 1891. He worked closely with his brother, Gustav, to build his machines.

He tested his gliders on hills near Berlin and in the Rhinow region. He even built an artificial hill called Fliegeberg to help him launch. He made over 2,000 successful flights during his career. His total time spent flying was about five hours. In 1893, he reached a record distance of 250 meters.

His inventions were very detailed and used many different shapes.

He created monoplanes with one wing and biplanes with two wings. He even tried to build machines with flapping wings like birds. One of his famous designs was the Normalsoaring apparatus from 1894.

This design was so good that at least nine were sold. He also held 25 different patents for his inventions. Some of his original gliders are now kept in museums in Washington, D.C. and London.

Sadly, Lilienthal's flying career ended in a crash in 1896. On August 9, the weather was sunny and about 20 degrees Celsius. During one of his flights, his glider stalled. A stall is when a wing loses the lift it needs to stay up. He could not regain control and fell from a height of about 15 meters. He died the next day from his injuries.

Even though he died, his ideas helped the people who built the first real airplanes.
