He was born in 1796 and grew up in Germany. He learned how to be a carpenter before starting his own shop in 1819. Thonet is most famous for inventing bentwood furniture. This was a new way to use wood for chairs and tables. Before him, most furniture was very heavy and carved. His new designs were light, strong, and very elegant. People all over the world loved his style.

His special way of working was quite clever.

He used hot steam to make wood soft and bendable. This allowed him to shape wood into graceful curves. He also used glued wooden slats to build his pieces. In 1837, he even bought a glue factory to help his work. This step-by-step process made it possible to make furniture very quickly. It changed how things were built in factories.

Thonet's career took him on many journeys. He started in Boppard, Germany, but later moved to Vienna, Austria. In 1841, he met Prince Klemens Wenzel von Metternich at a trade fair. The Prince loved the furniture and invited Thonet to the Vienna court. By 1842, Thonet was showing his chairs to the Imperial Family. He later opened a shop in 1849 with his four sons. His family helped him grow his business into a huge success.

One of his most famous creations is Chair No. 14.

This chair was made in 1859 and is very special. It could be taken apart into just a few pieces. This meant 36 chairs could fit into one small box. Because they were easy to pack, he could ship them everywhere. People call it the "chair of chairs" because it is so popular. About 50 million of these chairs have been made in total.

Thonet's work changed the world of design forever. He won many awards, including a bronze medal in London in 1851. He also won a silver medal in Paris in 1855. His company reached a peak in 1912 when it sold two million products. Even today, people still use his designs in homes and cafes. Some of his pieces, like the Model 1 rocking chair, are very famous. His ideas for making things light and easy to move are still used today.
