He was born in 1796. He learned how to be a carpenter. Later, he became an independent cabinetmaker. He found a new way to make furniture. He used hot steam to bend wood. This let him make wood into curved shapes. His chairs were light and strong. They were not heavy like old designs. People loved how they looked and felt.

This chair was special because it could come apart. It broke down into just a few parts. This made it easy to pack in boxes. You could fit 36 chairs in one small box. This helped him sell chairs all over the world. About 50 million of these chairs have been made. People still make them today. Thonet also made a rocking chair in 1860. His work changed how furniture was made for everyone.
