Margaret Knight was a famous American inventor. As a child, she loved using wood tools. She preferred playing with tools over playing with dolls.

When she was twelve, she worked in a cotton mill. She saw a worker get hurt by a machine. Soon after, she made a safety device for that machine. This helped keep other workers safe.

Knight is most known for her paper bag machine. Before her invention, bags were shaped like envelopes. These bags were weak and could not stand up. They were hard to use for heavy groceries.

In 1868, Knight made a machine to fix this. It could cut, fold, and glue paper. This machine made flat-bottomed bags very fast. These bags were much stronger and more useful.

A man once stole her design and tried to patent it first. Knight fought him in court. She used her own drawings and models as proof. She won the case and got her patent in 1871.

Knight held many patents. She made tools for making shoes and parts for motors. She was a leader for women inventors.
