He was born in 1819 in Massachusetts. As a young man, he worked in many shops. He learned how to fix tools and machines. One day, he had a big idea for a sewing machine.

He made a machine that used a lockstitch. A lockstitch is a way to join fabric together.

His machine had three important parts. It had a needle with a hole at the very tip. It had a shuttle that moved under the cloth. It also had a part that moved the fabric along.

He won a patent for his design in 1846. A patent is a legal paper that protects an invention. Other people later made machines like his. Howe had to go to court to protect his idea. He won the case and earned money from his work.

He also had an idea for a way to close clothes. This was like the modern zipper. Howe died in 1867. He is now in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
