He was born in 1831 in the Russian Empire. Later, he moved to the United States. He lived in many places like New York and San Francisco. He even worked for gold in Canada.

In 1869, Jacob opened a tailor shop in Reno, Nevada. He made items like tents and horse blankets. He used heavy cloth called duck cloth and denim. These fabrics came from a company called Levi Strauss & Co.

A customer asked for strong pants for her husband. He was a woodcutter. Jacob used copper rivets to fix the weak points. Rivets are small metal bits used to hold things together. These metal bits helped the seams and pockets stay strong.

Many workers wanted these pants. Jacob asked Levi Strauss for help with a patent. A patent is a legal paper for an invention. They received the patent in 1873. Jacob also added a special orange stitch to the back pocket.
