James Hargreaves invented a new machine called the spinning jenny.

He lived in England. He made it between 1764 and 1765. Before this, making thread was very slow. People needed more thread to make cloth. This was because a new tool called the flying shuttle made weaving much faster.

The spinning jenny was a metal frame. It had wooden spindles at one end. A spindle is a part that spins.

A worker could spin eight threads at once. Later, machines could spin 120 threads at once! This made the work much faster. It also made the cost of yarn go down.

To use it, a person uses both hands. The left hand pulls bars to stretch the thread. The right hand turns a wheel. This makes all the spindles spin fast. A wire called a faller helps guide the thread.

The machine made coarse thread. It helped start the factory system for making cotton. The jenny was used until about 1810.
