Ring spinning

Ring spinning is a way to make yarn. It turns soft fibers like cotton or wool into thread.

This process uses a machine called a ring frame. First, the machine takes roving, which is unspun thread. The roving goes through drafting rollers. These are rollers that spin at different speeds. The front roller spins faster than the back one. This pulls the roving to make it thin and straight.

Next, the thin roving goes through a small D-shaped ring. A tiny part called a traveller moves around this ring. The spindle, which is a spinning rod, also turns. The spindle and the traveller spin at different speeds. This difference in speed twists the fibers into strong yarn.

As the yarn twists, it winds onto a bobbin. The bobbin stays on the spindle. A moving rail helps guide the thread into a shape called a cop. Spindles can spin very fast. Some can reach 25,000 rpm, which means rotations per minute.

Workers must do a task called doffing. This means they remove full bobbins and add empty ones. This helps the machine keep making yarn.
