A hair dryer is a tool that blows warm air.

It helps you dry and style your hair. People use them at home or in salons.

Early dryers were very different. In 1888, a stylist made a large version. It was a big bonnet that sat on a stove pipe.

You had to sit under it to use it. Handheld dryers arrived around 1920. These early models were heavy and could be unsafe. They used only 100 watts of power. Today, a dryer can use up to 2000 watts.

How does it work? Most dryers have a fan and heating coils. The coils are often made of nichrome. This is a wire that stays strong when hot. The fan blows air past these coils. This makes the air warm. Some dryers have a "cool shot" button. This lets out room-temperature air to set a style.

You can use different parts to help. A diffuser is a wide attachment. It spreads the air out so hair does not blow around. This helps curls stay nice. An airflow concentrator does the opposite. It makes the air go into one small spot.
