An iron is a tool used to smooth clothes. It removes wrinkles and creases.

It works by using heat and weight. Tiny chains of molecules in fabric hold wrinkles in place. The heat and weight of the iron loosen these ties. The fabric stays in its new, smooth shape when it cools. Some fabrics, like cotton, need water to help.

Long ago, people used many ways to heat irons. Some were solid metal pieces heated on a stove. Others were metal boxes filled with hot coals.

In China, people used metal pans with hot coals. In India, some used burning coconut shells.

Today, most people use electric irons. These use a hot plate called a sole plate. This plate is made of smooth metal like stainless steel. A thermostat helps the iron stay at the right heat.

Many irons also make steam. They have a water reservoir, which is a small tank for water. Steam helps the iron work even better on tough creases.
