An iron is a small tool used to smooth clothes.

It helps remove wrinkles and unwanted creases from fabric. This tool is also called a flatiron or a smoothing iron. Most irons used in homes today work at different temperatures. The name comes from the metal used to make them long ago. Ironing is often the very last step in washing clothes.

Ironing works through a very interesting way it works with molecules. Fabrics are made of long chains of molecules called polymer fibers. These chains have ties between them that hold wrinkles in place. When you use an iron, the heat and weight do something special. The heat and weight of the plate loosen those ties. The fibers stretch out under the pressure of the iron. The fabric then keeps its new, smooth shape once it cools down.

Some materials like cotton need water to help loosen those bonds.

People have used many different kinds of irons throughout history. In China, people used metal pans filled with hot coals in the 1st century BC. In Kerala, India, people used burning coconut shells to heat things. Some people used solid metal slabs called sadirons to smooth clothes. These were thick pieces of cast iron with a handle. They were heated directly on a fire or a stove.

Later, people used metal boxes filled with hot coals or even fuels like kerosene.

Modern electric irons changed how we handle laundry. Henry W. Seely of New York City invented the electric flatiron. He received a patent for his invention on June 6, 1882. His early iron weighed almost two pounds and took a long time to heat up. The first electric steam iron arrived in 1926 from a company called Eldec. Later, Max Skolnik of Chicago patented a steam iron in 1934. His Steam-O-Matic brand became very popular during the 1940s and 1950s.

Today, most irons have many helpful features to make work easier. They have a hot metal part called a sole plate. This plate is usually made of smooth aluminum or stainless steel. A thermostat helps the iron stay at the right temperature. Many irons also have a water reservoir to make steam. This steam can come out in a constant stream or a quick burst.

Some advanced irons even have a special coating to help them glide. You can even find large ironing centers with separate steam tanks to work faster.
