Boiler (power generation)

A boiler is a special tool used to create steam.

It works by applying heat energy to water. This steam can be used to power many things. Some boilers are small and part of a machine. A steam locomotive uses a small boiler to move. Other boilers are huge and stay in one place. These large ones provide steam for power stations or big factories.

To make steam, the boiler uses a firebox or a furnace. This is a place where fuel like coal, oil, or gas burns. The heat from the fire moves into the water. This part of the work is called boiling. The water turns into what is known as saturated steam. This steam stays at the boiling point. If you add even more heat, it becomes superheated steam.

This extra heat makes the steam better at doing work. It also helps stop water droplets from forming in the steam.

People have been building boilers for a very long time. In 1712, the first Newcomen engine used a simple boiler. It was like a large kettle for a brewer. Later, an engineer named John Smeaton made them better. He made the hot gases travel through a path called a flue. This helped the heat reach more of the boiler. Around 1775, Boulton and Watt made the wagon top boiler. This design used a three-pass system to move heat more effectively.

Many inventors worked to make boilers stronger and faster. John Blakey and Oliver Evans both worked on cylindrical designs in the 1770s. Evans used a long iron tube to hold the water. Richard Trevithick created the Cornish boiler around 1812. This was a very strong and efficient design. Later, the Lancashire boiler used two furnaces side-by-side. This allowed workers to clean one furnace while the other worked.

In 1828, Marc Seguin used many small tubes to move heat. This idea helped the famous Rocket locomotive win a big trial in 1829.

Boilers need a steady flow of air to keep the fire burning. This air flow is called draught. Some boilers use a fan to suck gases out. This is called induced draught. Other boilers use a fan to push air in. This is called forced draught. Large boilers often use both types to stay balanced.

This is much better than relying on natural air. It helps the boiler work more reliably and saves energy.
