A boiler is a strong, closed container used to heat a liquid. Most of the time, that liquid is water.

The heated liquid or the steam it creates can be used for many jobs. It can provide heat for a whole building or help cook food. Some boilers even create power for large machines. The heated fluid leaves the boiler to do this work. This makes a boiler a very important tool in our world.

There are different ways a boiler works depending on its design. In a fire-tube boiler, hot gases move through tubes that sit inside the water.

This design is what almost all steam locomotives used in the past. Another way is the water-tube boiler. In this version, the water is actually inside the tubes. These tubes are placed inside a hot furnace. This type can make steam very quickly. It is often used when very high pressure is needed.

People have used different materials to build boilers throughout history. During the Victorian age of steam, makers used high-grade wrought iron. They put the pieces together using rivets. In the 20th century, engineers began using steel instead. Steel is often stronger and cheaper to make. It can also be put together quickly using welding. While steel is common, some small models use copper or brass. This is because those metals are easier to shape into small sizes.

Finding a heat source is a key part of how a boiler functions. Many boilers burn fuels like coal, oil, or natural gas. Some power plants even use biofuels like bagasse. In nuclear power plants, special steam generators use heat from nuclear fission.

There are also heat recovery steam generators. These use leftover heat from other processes to make steam. This helps save fuel and makes the system more efficient. Different methods exist to measure how well a boiler uses its fuel.

Because boilers hold heat and pressure, they must be handled with care. If a boiler shell is too thin, it could rupture.

When water turns into steam, it expands to over 1,000 times its original size. This can lead to a very violent eruption if the metal breaks. To stay safe, organizations like the ASME create strict rules for building them. Engineers also treat the water to prevent rust and scale. This keeps the boiler working well and prevents dangerous accidents. Keeping the water level correct is also vital for safety.
