A thermal power station is a huge facility that makes electricity.

These stations are very important for our world. They currently produce 70% of all electricity on Earth. They provide a steady and reliable flow of power. This steady power is called a baseload supply. It helps keep the electrical grid stable. This stability is vital for economic growth in many regions.

Most of these plants work by turning heat into motion.

First, a fuel source creates a lot of heat. This fuel can be coal, natural gas, or oil. Some plants even use nuclear fuel or solar energy.

In many plants, this heat boils water in a special vessel. The water becomes high-pressure steam. This steam rushes toward a turbine to spin its blades. The spinning turbine is connected to an electric generator. The generator then turns that motion into electricity.

People have used steam to make power for a long time.

In the 1700s, people used reciprocating steam engines. James Watt made important improvements to these engines. In 1882, the first central power stations opened. These were the Pearl Street Station in New York and the Holborn Viaduct station in London. Later, the steam turbine was invented in 1884. By 1905, turbines replaced older engines in almost all large power stations.

There are many different ways to build these plants.

Some use a Rankine cycle to reuse water. In this cycle, a condenser cools the steam back into water. This hot water is then recycled to make more steam.

Other plants use a combined cycle to be more efficient. These plants use waste heat from a gas turbine to make extra steam. Some plants also use cogeneration. This means they make both electricity and useful heat at the same time.

Thermal power stations connect to many parts of our lives.

They can provide heat for homes or for big factories. Some plants in desert countries even use heat to make fresh water. This process is called desalination. However, burning fossil fuels can release greenhouse gases into the air. This can lead to climate change and air pollution. Scientists are now working on new ways to capture these gases. They are also finding ways to use cleaner energy sources.
